Meet the Director

Jordan Baker, Director

Jordan Baker is excited to be making his directorial debut with The Hound Of The Baskervilles which marks his first project at the Evergreen Playhouse! Jordan has previously been seen on stage in shows like Shakespeare In Love, Red, and You Can’t Take It With You at Centralia College where he played Marlowe, Ken, and Tony respectively. Jordan has also worked with the Roxy Theater in Morton where he played Laurie in Little Women. Jordan hopes you enjoy this Halloween spectacular with this amazing cast!

A Note From the Director:

In 1887, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would shop his newest story, “A Study In Scarlet” to no success, with publishers telling him the main character was too unlikeable and not recognizable enough. Doyle was confident in his creation and continued to find a publisher. Now Sherlock Holmes is perhaps the most recognizable literary character of all time. With Doyle going on to write 56 Holmes stories with countless spinoff novels, short stories and comics, as well as an astounding 226 films and television series, not to mention theatre adaptations. Britain’s number one detective is still captivating audiences to this day. Above all, the most recognizable story for the mystery solving duo of Sherlock and Watson is “The Hound Of The Baskervilles”.

Tim Kelly’s retelling of the timeless mystery recreates and reframes the entire adventure in a brand new light. With new plot points and details that differ greatly from the original while still keeping true to the heart of the story.

Theatre very rarely dives into the world of horror, so when the opportunity presents itself, many are quick to be a part of it. I think these classic characters and dynamics lend themselves perfectly to the stage, and adding a very unique style of suspense and horror is a refreshing and entertaining way to tell the story that very few adaptations get the privilege to do, literally putting the audience in the same room as the mystery, watching this colorful and suspicious cast walk in and out of the hall where all the action takes place.

I wanted to take Kelly’s interpretation into a macabre world of Victorian-Gothic aesthetic, with brand new interpretations of some of these beloved characters. Most importantly for me, I wanted to reframe this iconic duo of Sherlock and Watson in a way that we’ve never seen. Drawing inspiration from other pairs such as Doc and Marty from Back To The Future, I decided on a “Teacher and Apprentice” style companionship, with Watson as a budding Doctor taken under the wing of the mystery master. This new relationship created immediately more of a story and background for the two and creates an arc for Watson that wasn’t previously there. Several other characters from the book have been completely reimagined, such as Dr. James Mortimer now being Lady Agatha Mortimer.

I think this show is the perfect show for the Halloween season. It’s light and silly with lots of suspense, a mystery the audience gets to engage with, and even a couple scares that make you jump. This cast and crew have created such a fun show, and I’m honored to have it be the season opener here. I hope everyone enjoys and has a very happy Halloween! Welcome back to theatre!

Neveah McMinds, Light & Sound Operator

Nevaeh McMinds is on the tech team for The Hound of the Baskervilles. Nevaeh is studying theater at Centralia College and is just jumping into the theater world. Nevaeh is delighted to be working with such a talented group of individuals and thoroughly enjoyed her time with this production.

Alene Stewart, Properties/ Scenic Dressing

Alene (Al to her friends) became a member of The Evergreen Playhouse in March, 2013 when she volunteered to decorate the set of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.  Her first on stage role was as Prospera in Shakespeare’s The Tempest.  Her favorite role was Mother in a staged reading of Night Mother by Marsha Norman. But her dream role was as Claree Belcher in Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling. She has a couple that are among her most fun roles. One was Lillian Troy in I Hate Hamlet by Paul Rudnick. The other was Ethel in Moon Over Buffalo by Ken Ludwig. Alene loves the challenge of creating props and set pieces.  If you ask her what some of her best creations are, she will tell you vintage microphones for Alfred Hitchcock: The Radio Play by Joe Landry, a bleeding garrotte for Deathtrap by Ira Levin, a radiator heater made out of cardboard and pvc pipe for Barefoot in the Park by Neil Simon, a tree trunk constructed of a sono tube/chicken wire and paper mache for Children of Eden by Stephen Schwartz and most recently a wood chopping machine for Beauty and the Beast.  And the most creative set she helped with was undoubtedly Play On by Rick Abbot. Alene also serves as the Treasurer for the Evergreen. Al invites each and everyone of you to come and join the joy and excitement, the challenges and triumphs, the fun and the hard work that is community theater. There is always room for one more. Let that one more be you.

Note From the Board

Welcome back to the Evergreen Playhouse. My goodness, how we’ve missed you. It has been over a year and half since we have been together and we are so grateful to bring theatre back to the Evergreen Playhouse stage.

We took this gift of time to renovate and rejuvenate our beautiful theatre and we took time to raise money to help offset the loss of income during those difficult 20 months. As you sit here in the theatre, you will notice the new paint, the new carpet, the new seats but most of all you will notice how good it feels to be here celebrating the stories of our 62nd season.

Live theatre is important, it is immediate, and it is necessary. Our stories this year will feature actors putting themselves out there for you to love or hate, they will bare their souls to you, share the vulnerability of these characters, and they will bring laughter, joy and a little bit of intrigue to you as well.

When you, the audience, reacts, applauds, gasps, or is held in silence, that is what live theatre is - that moment where the people onstage connect with the people in the seats and there is no better feeling when that connection is made. Thank you all for joining us in person again - it is so good to be back.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the show -

Kris Garrett, Board President

To contact the board, please email us. Board meetings are open to the public and are every second Sunday of the month at 6:30pm.
